Drew Fuller Interview

Source: Alloy.com

Drew Fuller is hot enough to get any girl’s motor running! So when we chatted with him about his new ABC Family movie, The Circuit, you know our heart was totally facing. Find out what Drew had to say about his co-star, Michelle Trachtenberg, his fave road trip tunes, and his driving skills!

Are you excited about The Circuit coming out?

Yeah. It’s funny — I don’t own a TV. I’m in Charleston, SC, and I don’t have a TV here. At home, I have a TV, but I don’t have cable, so it serves the purpose of DVD-viewing or Xbox.

The movie premieres the same day as season two of your TV show, Army Wives. How does that feel?

I’m overwhelmed, and it’s probably better for my head and my ego that I don’t have a TV because I am unaware of these things.

Good thing they’re at different times so your fans can watch both! How is filming a TV show different than filming a movie like The Circuit?

What I love about shooting movies is that you go in, do a job for anywhere from a month to three months, you build this beautiful character, and then you put him to rest and he’s done. You’ll never play him again unless there’s a sequel, as opposed to a TV show that can go from anywhere from one to seven years. I think it just gets a little bit more monotonous with TV. What’s beautiful about TV is that it’s constant work, and it feels nice to have that steady flow of income. People who primarily stick to movies might do a movie every two months and then you might not work again for 13 months! I love the consistency of being on a TV show, but I love being able to build a new character frequently in doing movies.

What was it like filming up in Nova Scotia?

Stunning. It was incredible. I made three lifelong friends with Bill Campbell, Tommy Lioutas, and Paul Rae. The four of us went on mini-road trips together we had the time off. I was so surprised by it, and I really look foreword to going back and shooting another film there — I would jump on it. Perfect weather, beautiful people, great restaurants. It was just awesome. I had the best time.

What was it like working with Michelle?

Michelle was fantastic. She loves to have a good time. Being on set with her and going out at night with her, she’s always looking for fun, good times, and I love that she brings this beautiful, sweet energy to each day and is always cracking jokes and pulling pranks. I love that stuff. I just remember always laughing with her.

Your character and Michelle’s charter compete with each other and then start dating. Have you ever had a relationship like that?

No. I had a relationship that started off with us being inspired by each other and turned more into a competition. With actors dating actors, it’s really difficult to sustain that type of competition because there always has to be this feeling of support, not competition.

Are you a competitive person?

When it comes to sports, absolutely. That being said, it depends on the situation. Most of the time, I don’t find myself extremely competitive. I like it for the sake of sports. When it comes to acting, it’s so competitive out there already, and to get into that mind set, it’s really detrimental for your mental health and then you lose sight of what sight of what it’s really all about.

What was it like to drive the stock cars?

I love driving. When I heard that it was a NASCAR racing movie, I asked, “Do I get to drive a car?” I got to go up early and practice racing cars. By the end of it, they let me take the car out onto the track. I was screaming at the top of my lungs — it was the most fun I’ve ever had! It was incredible. Here I am, racing cars, and it was just incredible

Were you good at it?

At the end, the guys who trained me offered to enter me in a race and were convinced that I would place really well in it. For production reasons and insurance reasons, I wasn’t able to do it, but the invite gave me confidence. I definitely think I have this in me, and I can definitely drive.

Was most of your driving done with stunt doubles, or did you film most of it?

I’d say 50-50. I asked to drive every single one and every single race, but it comes down to insurance. If I got injured in any way and they had to shut down production, that would not be good. They let me do what they felt was safe, and the rest of the time they had a stunt double.

Did making The Circuit give you more of an appreciation for NASCAR?

Absolutely. I picked up NASCAR For Dummies. My ignorance when it came to NASCAR was really high. I read up on how much goes into the racing and the cars, and how fast they’re really going. I caught a real race in Arlington, NC. It was a big awakening. I have a major appreciation for what they do. Speed is speed. If you’re going fast, it’s fun.

What songs do you like driving to?

It depends what mood I am in. If I am in a melancholy mood, it might be something a lot softer, like Massive Attack. If I am just on an open road, anything from The Strokes to…I don’t know. It’s always changing.

If you were on a road trip, who would you want to go with you?

My dog and my girl.

Catch The Circuit on June 8 at 8/7c, only on ABC Family!
