On Saturday, 9/19/09, Kim and I met Mama Fuller for lunch and an exclusive on her son Drew. Here is how it went….
What was Drew’s favorite movie growing up?
Mama Fuller: I can’t recall one specific one but both Drew and Hilary loved Amadeus. Drew did collect Star Wars figurines and loved the Star Wars movies. He had the Darth Vader helmet and a light saber.
What role would you love to see Drew play?
Mama Fuller: I would love to see him in a comedy role. I happen to think he is very funny.
What sports did he play growing up?
Mama Fuller: He played baseball and was really, really good at tennis. When he left the tennis team after high school, he became really good on his own. He loves to golf and is more involved with golf now.
What was his first word?
Mama Fuller: I can’t remember!
Kelly & Kim: We think it was motorcycle…
Mama Fuller: laughs…probably
What is a funny moment from Drew’s childhood?
Mama Fuller: Hmm…I can’t recall one funny moment of Drew as a kid but I specifically remember him being both intuitive and able to talk to anyone.
What is your favorite project Drew has worked on?
Mama Fuller: I feel he has more to come, but I really enjoyed his performance in “The Ultimate Gift”. I think it showed his biggest range of emotion. I also enjoyed one particular episode of ”Army Wives” Season 2 [The Hero Returns]. The speech Drew gave at the end was great and I loved that I learned something new about the Army and how they are still looking for missing soldiers.
Does the family watch Drew’s projects?
Mama Fuller: The family gathers around the TV on Sundays. IT’S MANDATORY!!! Even his niece likes to watch him on TV and will point at the TV and say “Drew!” when he appears. We have seen all of his performances. I admit I do watch ”Army Wives” because Drew is on it.
Mama Fuller: When we got off the plane in Berlin [where "Final Contract" filmed], he was recognized by a bunch of girls who were there. I thought that was amazing that he was recognized when really all he had done was “Charmed”. Now when we go out as a family, he is more recognizable. After spending a month with Drew in Germany while filming “Final Contract”, he traveled to Italy on his own for several weeks. He has never been afraid to travel on his own.
How did Drew get started into acting?
Mama Fuller: After the UCLA cover, I sent his photo to a talent agent who called and asked me to come in for a visit. I arrived to see 100 other moms sitting in the room and waited my turn and spoke with the agent. That’s what started his career. We never pushed him into acting. When he was 16 and started driving, he pursued it on his own. He has always handled rejection well. We fully supported him. He was gone most of his senior year modeling and missed out on a lot, but still graduated. He also moved out when he was 18.
Did Drew ever want to go to college?
Mama Fuller: He wasn’t ready to go back and sit in a classroom after high school. I encouraged him to read a lot to keep his mind alert. He has a fondness for art and museums and I feel that is where he learned alot of his education. He learned more traveling around the world. He loves San Francisco. He feels connected there. I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved there someday.
Mama Fuller: Hilary and Drew couldn’t be more opposite (as brother and sister). They are both doing what they love as a career. There is no greater accomplishment for a parent than that.
Mama Fuller: When he first got “Tennessee”, she had a hard time adapting. She is really happy now and he is so good with her. He is very patient and she now feels like she has an owner who truly cares about her.
How do you see Drew and Sally’s relationship in real life?
Mama Fuller: I feel he has a great relationship with Sally and hangs out a lot with Sterling Brown. When he comes home, time goes so quickly. He just came home and now it’s mid September and he goes back again in January.
Have you been to see Drew in Charleston?
Mama Fuller: Yes! We originally planned on staying for 5 days and then realized we weren’t going to make it back any time soon, so we extended it to 10 days. I love it there. [Papa Fuller] and Drew even played in a golf tournament. Drew also loves to go to North Carolina. Everything there is so green and the climate is completely different.
Mama Fuller: I am so appreciative of DFF.com and what you do Kelly. I can’t believe how long it’s been open and the persistence you have to keep up with him.
NOTE: DFF.com just celebrated 6 years online in July and is currently the only running fan site for Drew.
We finished our questions with Mama Fuller and our wonderful lunch and found out a few funny facts about Drew. For instance, Drew did not make his bed as a kid. He didn’t have posters on his walls… Mama Fuller just happens to be a neat-a-holic! Mama Fuller dropped us off and we watched her leave after a hug goodbye and a promise to see her again next year! Many, many thanks to Mama Fuller for hand delivering Drew’s presents and for spending lunch with us recalling moments in Drew’s life.
