Appearing like the Terminator in a hitting-the-past-to-save-the-future kind of way, we were all a bit blown away by Drew Fuller who played whitelighter Chris Perry in the last episodes of Charmed this season. And we’ve discovered that he’ll be back next year for an even bigger role! But will he be the new beastie that takes on the Charmed ones, or the replacement Leo? We chatted with the star as he began filming on the new season…
So Drew, how is it being the new guy on a show that’s already so successful?
It’s really amazing because the show is established. I’ve been given this gift of not having to worry about, “Is the show going to get picked up? What night is it going to be on? Are we going to get an audience?” This show is getting better every year. The ratings are going higher. So it’s actually been the best blessing!
Is it intimidating joining a cast of hotties? Even though you’re a hottie too…
I have no clue what a ‘hottie’ is. To think of myself in those terms is absurd! [But] I am the new kid [but] that’s never bothered me. I love going into new situations where I can meet new people and form strong bonds. I work with three amazingly beautiful women who are all really smart. I think they’re all amazing and the great part about it is each of them is so individual. Conversations are amazing!
So it’s been a pretty easy process?
The hardest thing about coming to Charmed is the dialogue. It’s about warlocks and witches and saving the planet, and, “This is what happened in the future on my world.” You’re talking about things that are not everyday conversations, and you’ve got to make it sound very believable without taking yourself too seriously. That’s why the show is successful, because the girls have fun.
Are you enjoying playing the character of Chris?
I take a look at my character and the first thing that comes to mind is Puck [from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream]. I dance around the question and answer a completely different question!
So what can you reveal about Chris’ evolution next season?
I can’t divulge too much, but I’m the new whitelighter. You don’t know what’ll happen with Leo, I’m very mysterious. They’re keeping me shrouded in secrecy the entire time. And I’m going to slowly reveal, throughout the season, my character and my motives. So sometimes I’m going to be really good. And sometimes I’m going to be evil. And it’s all for the greater good of my purpose that I’m serving.
But will you be a regular character?
Yes, I’m signed on for next season. I don’t even know anything about what’s going to happen with my character yet. I start a little fire here, a little fire there — but in a sweet way. They’re keeping me in the dark just as I’m keeping you in the dark.
Yeah, thanks for that! We won’t complain though, and we doubt you’d be complaining about much with your career at the moment…
You won’t find me complaining about my life. I don’t have time to [think] about anything but work. I get to show up, pick some fights, flirt with girls, and have fun.
So apart from work, what will you be up to today?
Today, I’m in Heaven. I go to Heaven.
You mean in the show, or in real life?
[Well] I’m sitting in this office right now, and there’s a picture of Alyssa [Milano] dressed as this Egyptian mummy, goddess type of thing. Then right next to her is Rose [McGowan], dressed as a nymph. Then the third poster is Alyssa dressed as a mermaid!
